This 18th Century Huguenot Estate lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the foothills of the Black Mountain. The Georgian Mansion and old estate buildings, are as its Welsh name tells us (glyn hir is literally translated as long valley) built on a plateau above a long wooded valley with the river Llwchwr and its beautiful 30ft cascades at its heart surrounded by verdant Welsh countryside full of native flora and fauna. Close to the historical Mansion with its sweeping landscape gardens and clustered around the old central farmyard are all but one of the cottages, this being situated off the farmyard in the walled orchard with its original rows of fruit trees as well as a multitude of fruiting bushes, vegetable and flower beds.
Glynhir is a family run business which began back in 1965. Since then we have worked very hard to maintain Glynhir as a haven for people from all walks of life.
The largest and oldest cottage is the Bailiffs House, once the home of the farm bailiff and his family as well as being the dairy. Boasting a view over the whole yard with its cobbled duck pond and old pig scots, with its comings and goings and its free-roaming and friendly farm birds, peacocks and cats, the cottage has retained much of its aged charm. Centrally heated and sleeping up to 8 people in the three large oak beamed rooms, reached by a quirky split two-way stairs, the largest bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, whilst the other two bedrooms share a central bathroom, each with their own access. Downstairs there is a flagstone entryway and carpeted sitting room with a log stove and recently discovered bread oven set in the large stone chimney breast, TV, DVD and plenty of cosy seating. The well equipped modernised kitchen and dining area are also on the ground floor as is an extra toilet and cloakroom.
We cater for a wide variety of groups and have done for the past 30 years or so. Glynhir offers a multitude of options, from the large sitting room in the Mansion to the well fitted studio about the restaurant that seats up to 45. We can cater for 25 people in singe bed rooms or 36 in shared rooms but single bed spaces.
At Glynhir we strive to be as self sufficient as possible. We have hens and ducks to provide eggs and an extensive cottage garden to provide the bulk of our fruit and vegetable requirements. We recycle as much as possible throughout the year.
For those visitors who want to explore the area, Glynhir is an ideally situated base. Within a short drive there is a huge choice of things to do - from fishing the famous Towy or the Llwchwr, to playing golf next door at Glynhir Golf Club, to horse riding at local stables or walking one of the routes short or long across the fabulous rolling countryside. And of the many places to see and visit, to mention but a few that our garden county boasts, mystical castles, golden beaches, historic gardens, the Brecon Beacons National Park, wildlife and fowl parks as well as several thriving market towns, all just a short drive away.
