Skyros, the leading alternative holiday, offers independent-spirited travellers unique and unforgettable holidays. The perfect antidote to dated package holidays, this is an adventure that opens the heart, expands the mind, recharges the body and uplifts the spirit. Courses, facilitated by world-renowned teachers, are usually held outdoors in the beautiful landscape. Choose from yoga, creative writing, life choices, art, music & singing, dance, windsurfing, abseiling and much more.
Right by the sea and in the arms of a magnificent pine forest, Atsitsa has a magical quality that enchants the senses and makes inroads to the heart. Atsitsas vibrant community is friendly and bursting with life. Courses are held outdoors on beautiful stone terraces, between the pine forest and the sea. People are free to do as much or as little as they want. There is always time to sunbathe, swim, walk in the pine forest and enjoy the tranquility of the bay. The evenings are taken up by parties, lively discussions and spontaneous, often hilarious events.
The Skyros Centre, home to the Writers Lab, the Life Choices programme and the Art Studio, nestles on the hillside at the edge of Skyros village. Built high up to evade the clutches of Mediterranean pirates, the village is accessible only by foot through narrow, cobblestoned streets. The long, sandy beach is a pleasant ten minute walk away. The Centres courtyard, shaded by fig and pomegranate trees, has a panoramic view of the valley and the Aegean.
Skyros' lively community is friendly and bursting with life. For many the real value and essence of a spell in Skyros is to be found in its rich community life and the opportunity to meet a wide variety of interesting people. Skyros traditions of demos (exchanging news), kos (small family groups) and co-listening (the option of meeting a partner each day) all help to create a vibrant community life of which everyone feels a part
Atsitsa is full board offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are Mediterranean in style using locally sourced seasonal fruits and vegetables, natural yoghurt and cheeses, pulses and grains. Meat or fish is usually served in the evenings but vegetarians and special diets are always catered for. The Skyros Centre is half board offering breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Adapted from the villagers traditional diet, meals are based on fresh fruit and vegetables, natural yoghurt, grains and cheese. They are eaten on the Centres terrace which enjoys a panoramic view over the sea.
Atsitsa - People live simply and comfortably in Atsitsa. Share a 3/4 bedded room in the stone villa or stay, as most choose to do, in twin-bedded huts. Huts are homely and rustic, set amidst Atsitsa's lush gardens and shaded by pine and fruit trees. Skyros Centre - Participants stay in rooms close to the Centre that combine modern comforts with a Skyrian ambience. Most are ensuite rooms or small apartments some are charming rooms within traditional houses either in the village or in the beach area of magazia.
Atsitsa has its own cafe-bar where you can sip cool drinks, watch the glorious sunsets over the sea and dance the night away. Evening activities include spontaneous events such as parties, story-telling, games, talks or comedy shows. Some people just talk until the early hours or swim by moonlight. Skyros nightlife is relaxed yet with much to offer. There are bars with live music that are open until the early hours and tavernas with delicious food and inexpensive drinks. In the villages nightclubs one can dance the night away.
Travelling solo needn't be a daunting experience. Skyros safe and congenial atmosphere brings people together in a way daily life rarely does. Here you will feel immediately at home, make it easily into a new circle of friends, establish new bonds, make lifetime friendships and also open yourself to new possibilities and feel part of something bigger. Skyros offers solo travellers the opportunity to avoid single supplements by sharing twin accommodation with another person. Many of those who share end up with friends for life.
Skyros provides holistic holidays which emphasize being rather than having, doing rather than consuming and cooperating rather than competing. We are committed to an eco-friendly future and support solar heating and recycling, including our shower water. Skyros encourages responsible integration with the local communities including the teaching of local history, culture and language and sponsorship of local events and organisations. Skyros uses locally owned and maintained facilities with policies in place that favour local produce and services and locals are employed wherever possible e.g., in Cuba we use local dance partners and in Southeast Asia local guides are used.
